Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a chronic condition that seriously affects the quality of life of the patient. Kidney dialysis is the preferred mode of treatment for severe conditions wherein both kidneys are damage. Dialysis is a procedure that filters and purifies the blood using a machine. Kidney has many roles an essential role of the kidney is to regulate the body's fluid balance. Kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products from the blood. There are two main types of dialysis namely hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis uses an external machine and special type of filter to remove excess waste products and water from the blood. During hemodialysis, blood passes from the patient's body to the dialysis machine through sterile tubing and filter, called a dialysis membrane by removing excess waste products and water from the body, while in peritoneal dialysis uses fluid that is placed into the patient's abdominal cavity through a plastic tube called peritoneal dialysis catheter to remove excess waste products and fluid from the body.
About 1 in 10 people have some degree of CKD. It can develop at any age and various conditions can lead to CKD. Kidney disease can affect people of all ages and races. Population in Asia pacific countries such as India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka or Pakistan have a higher risk of CKD. This risk is due in part to high rates of diabetes and high blood pressure in these communities. CKD can occur at any age, but are more common geriatric and women. In addition, about half of people aged 75 or more have some degree of CKD. Simple blood and urine tests can detect CKD and simple, low cost treatments can slow the progression of the disease, reduce the risk of associated heart attacks and strokes and improve quality of life.
Dialysis machines have three basic functions: circulation of blood from the patient’s access through the dialyzer and back to the access using a blood pump and a disposable tubing set, preparation of dialysate from purified water and one or more concentrates and circulation of that dialysate through the dialyzer using a system that also controls the rate of fluid removal, and monitoring for any loss of integrity in either the blood or dialysate circuit or any excursion of an operating parameter outside a predefined range.
Increasing number of renal disease and chronic kidney disease patients across the globe, increasing geriatric population, rising prevalence of diabetes and hypertension, high risk and complications related to vascular access are anticipated to drive the growth of the global hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis market during the forecast period.
The cost of treating the growing epidemic represents an enormous burden on healthcare systems worldwide, poor reimbursement schemes and processes, high risks and complications associated with dialysis are some factors which are expected to hamper the growth of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis market worldwide.
New dialysis technology designed to be more user-friendly for patients and staff, use of biocompatible fluids for dialysis which have more physiologic pH and reduced glucose degradation and implantable artificial kidney into human body which are timely monitored by doctors are the on-going trends in the dialysis market.
The global hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis market report has been segmented on the basis of products and service, end user, and region. Currently, the market in North America dominates the market in terms of revenue owing to factors such as advanced technology and availability of medical reimbursements. APAC accounts the second largest market share due to increasing prevalence pool of diabetes and hypertension, and improving reimbursement scenario and infrastructure is the driving the market in the region.
