Demand for Rotational Molding Powder from 2015 to 2020 Vs. Future Market Projections for 2021-2031
From 2015 to 2020, sales of rotomolding powder have increased at a stable rate, expanding over 5.0% CAGR.
Rotational molding powder, also known as roto-molding powder, is commonly polymer powder used for the rotational molding process. The global production of rotomolding powder is estimated at XXX – XXX KMT as of 2020.
The rotational molding process was initially developed in 1780-1790, wherein the hollow molds are heated and rotated slowly, causing the material inside to coat on the walls of the mold to produce the desired shape and size of the object. The powder materials commonly used for this process are plastic powders such as polyethylene, PVC, and others. Over the years, several improvements in the process have spurred the growth of the target market.
However, the recent COVID-19 pandemic has severely negated the growth of the manufacturing industry and its raw materials. The Q2 of 2020 registered a significant gap in demand and supply. The supply of rotomolding powder and its raw materials, mainly from China, were considerably impeded due to stringent trade regulations imposed by several economies across the globe.
Global Rotational Molding Powder Market Revenue Outlook:
Global rotomolding powder market was valued at over US$ 2.0 Bn in 2020 and is projected to register а САGR of close to 6.0% by 2031.
China is not only the leading producer of rotomolding powder, but also the primary consumer. The COVID-19 pandemic in the second quarter of 2020 and China at the pandemic's epicenter caused severe disruptions across the supply chain worldwide.
The Q2 and Q3 of 2020 adversely affected the market both in terms of supply and demand. Closure of manufacturing facilities across the globe subdued the demand for rotomolding powders. Moreover, the limited supply of these materials, mainly due to trade restricitions across various economies, caused volatility in the prices of the materials. Nonetheless, the market is expected to witness several developments despite the negative impact due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Market Dynamics:
Nowadays, practically all sectors use rotationally molded parts, especially of plastic. The process is considered ideal for the production of one-piece hollow parts or double-wall open containers. Products such as tanks, drums, barrels, automotive components, toys, outdoor furniture, and many other products are manufactured through rotomolding.
Rotational molding mainly consumes thermoplastic materials, particularly polyolefins such as polyethylenes, which dominate the market for rotational molding parts. Polyethylenes such as LLDPE, HDPE, XLPE, and others command a dominant share of over 80% for the year 2020. Polymers such as PVC, polycarbonate, polypropylene, nylon, ABS, unsaturated polyesters, acrylics, epoxies, cellulosics, phenolics, fluorocarbons, polystyrenes, polybutylenes, silicones and polyurethanes are other major materials used to produce rotational molding parts.

Container tanks account for a significant share of the target market. Rotational molding is considered an optimal process for the production of chemical storage tanks from cross-linked polyethylenes. These tanks are considered excellent for chemicals storage compared to HDPE tanks since the latter tends to crack and are prone to notch sensitivity. Storage tanks produced by rotational molding have added advantages such as low production time, no requirement for welding or joining, low cost of raw materials, no material waste, making it ideal for low-volume production.
How are the recent trends shaping the industry in the coming years?
In July 2021, a US-based marine buoys products company – Sealite, installed a massive rotomolding machine to produce its signature products - ocean and lake buoys of all sizes. Its products are mainly manufactured from UV-stabilised polyethylene. The company’s buoys ranging from navigation buoys to huge ocean buoys are filled with 1,000 pounds of concrete as ballast. The company has been operating since 1982 and continued to produce even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, Tank Holding – North America’s largest rotational molder has acquired another rotational molder - Rotational Molding Inc (RMI). The acquisition provides additional opportunities to Tank Holding, with a comprehensive product portfolio and a large manufacturing facility footprint. These trends are expected to further fuel the market growth in the coming years.
