Demand for Ferulic Acid from 2015 to 2020 Vs. Future Market Projections for 2021-2031
From 2015 to 2020, sales of ferulic acid have increased at a stable rate, expanding at over 5% CAGR.
Ferulic acid, or the compound 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid, is one of the most abundantly available phenolic acids found in plants and some foods. These acids are commonly found in plants such as wheat, rice, oats, apples, artichokes, coffee, peanuts, etc. In addition, ferulic acid is found as ester cross-links with polysaccharides in the cell wall, such as pectin in spinach, arabinoxylans in grasses, and sugar beet and xyloglucans in bamboo. Owing to its phenolic nucleus and an extended side chain conjugation (proteins and carbohydrates), ferulic acid readily forms a resonance stabilized phenoxy radical that accounts for its potent antioxidant potential.
Ferulic acid is used to prevent discoloration of green tea, maintain the color tone of green peas, and prevent oxidation of bananas, therefore reducing bacterial contamination. It is also used to protect human skin from U.V. radiation. Thus, ferulic acid is widely used in cosmetics applications to absorb the long U.V. wavelength, as sunscreen or as a whitening agent. It also works as an anti-inflammatory agent, an apoptosis inhibitor, and a cardioprotective agent due to its structural characteristics. Food supplementation with ferulic acid and curcumin is considered a nutritional method to reduce oxidative damage and amyloid pathology in Alzheimer's disease.
Global Ferulic Acid Market Revenue Outlook:
The global ferulic acid market is valued at US$ 60 Mn in 2020 and is projected to register а САGR of close to 6% by 2031.
Increasing demand for ferulic acid in healthcare for various treatments such as colon cancer, diabetic damage to the liver, inflammation, pancreas, kidneys and Parkinson's disease is among some other factors increasing the growth of the target market. Additionally, it is used for treating atherosclerosis and thrombosis by decreasing cholesterol levels. Moreover, increasing access to healthcare facilities and manufacturers' efforts to decrease drug prices and develop innovative products is likely to drive the target market growth further globally.
Growth in the demand for cosmetic products such as anti-aging cream is anticipated to propel the development of the ferulic acid market globally, as the benefit of antioxidant, anti-allergic, antimicrobial properties protects skin from wrinkles and various other signs of aging. In addition, an increasing number of geriatric population is uplifting the ferulic acid market due to a shift in consumer preference for anti-aging creams and lotions. This acts as one of the factors expected to drive the demand of the ferulic acid market globally.
Ferulic acid is used as a food preservative in the food processing industry. In the last few years, the demand for preserving canned meat has increased due to ferulic acid's non-toxic nature, which makes it appropriate for usage in the food sector. Moreover, cumulative demand for packaged baby food products due to growth in the number of working parents and growing consumption of natural baked products are factors expected to boost the ferulic acid market growth.

The imports of ferulic acid declined by 3.6% during the Q2 of 2020 compared to the previous quarter due to the trade restrictions imposed to contain the coronavirus. Nonetheless, the imports stabilized in the Q3-2020, increasing to US$ 187 Mn, gaining by 14.1% from the previous quarter. On the other hand, the exports declined by 15.6% in Q2-2020 of the prior quarter and, post the lockdown relaxations, noted a subsequent growth of 25.7% in Q4-2020.
Regional Analysis:
Asia-Pacific is anticipated to hold a significant share of the global ferulic acid market. The region is also expected to register the highest growth rates over the forecast period. Growing cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical production activities in developed and developing economies in the region such as Japan, South Korea, China, India, etc., are expected to increase demand for ferulic acid. Robust growth of the cosmetics industry in China, Japan, and India is also likely to provide lucrative opportunities for the development of the market.
COVID-19 Impact Analysis:
The initial lockdown during Q1 and Q2 2020 caused severe disruptions in the supply chain of ferulic acid. Lack of supply of raw materials from major suppliers in China and halts in the movement of finished products stagnated the market growth. The closure of outlets and interrupted retail activities further exacerbated the situation. Relaxation of regulations post the initial lockdown and distribution through online markets helped the market to normalcy.
Nonetheless, various industry players in the global ferulic acid market are now increasingly focusing on establishing successful collaborations, acquisitions, and joint venture activities to enhance their respective customer bases. These players are also growing their supply capabilities to meet customer requirements on a local and global scale. This factor, paired with promising industrialization prospects in developing economies of the Asia-Pacific region, such as China, India, Taiwan, Indonesia, etc., are expected to create massive business opportunities for key players over the forecast period.
Competitive Landscape:
The ferulic acid market landscape appears highly fragmented, with a significant chunk of it being dominated by players in Asian countries.
