Surfactants are potent adjuvants and are classified as ionic, cationic, nonionic, and amphoteric. Mostly nonionic surfactants are used for agricultural adjuvants. Oil adjuvants are further sub-segmented as vegetable oils and petroleum oils. These are commonly used when leaf cuticles are thick or hot and dry, and oil adjuvants can increase the penetration of oil-soluble pesticides. Ammonium fertilizers used as adjuvants include urea-ammonium nitrates (UAN), ammonium sulfates, ammonium nitrates, and ammonium polyphosphates. Utility adjuvants work by altering the physical or chemical characteristics of the spray mixture for its ease of application. It can remain on the plant surface rather than regular, or its persistence in the environment drift control agents helps reduce the number of droplets prone off of a plant and landing onto other plants or areas not meant to be treated.
